Open source Performance testing, research & Analysis

NUST- SEECS is establishing a performance testing facility, in collaboration with leading software houses in Pakistan.

The project aims to initiate research and development on performance testing of software, in particular, Web-based software and distributed software systems. It also aims to provide a comprehensive solution to the performance testing requirements of software companies in Pakistan. From a meeting held between SEECS and representatives of various software companies on Dec 1, 2007, an important point came out that there was no performance testing facility anywhere in Pakistan that can help Pakistani software companies test the effect of extreme stress and heavy user interaction with their software.

    Usually, software companies complain that they usually have to test the behavior of their applications after the applications have been released to the public or clients. This results in a poor experience for clients and users if there are any bugs or inefficiencies left in the code.
    In order to facilitate this vital aspect of the software industry, SEECS has taken the initiative to start working in the area of performance testing. The center will be staffed with a full-time team of testing engineers, who will work with software companies to design test cases for them, discover stress conditions under which unexpected behavior is likely to take place, and propose possible solutions to handle those conditions.
    In addition, we plan to create a dedicated team of researchers and developers, who will work on developing indigenous solutions to the performance testing problem, thereby saving millions of dollars in foreign exchange. We will also train network engineers and administrators to enable the center to function reliably and efficiently.
    Undertaking research and development in this area is, therefore, an activity that can help kick-start a culture of extensive performance testing of software products. In addition, we can unearth new paradigms and techniques for software performance testing by conducting research in this field. Thus, we will help to significantly reduce the probability of non-scalable software by catching any scaling or reliability bugs in the testing stage.
